An automated external defibrillator (AED) is designed to be used by people who are not doctors. Once you switch it on, it tells you what to do, step by step, with voice prompts and pictures.
Switch it on and follow the prompts
Open the case and turn the device on. The AED will ask you to expose the chest and place the pads as shown on the pad pictures. Keep CPR going while someone else gets the AED ready.
Stand clear
The AED checks the heart rhythm by itself. When it says to stand clear, make sure nobody is touching the person. If a shock is advised, the device either delivers it or asks you to press the shock button.
Practise before you need it
AED practice with a trainer device is part of every BLS class, so the steps feel familiar if you ever need them.
